Anyone can say they're Gas Safe registered. Here's how to actually check, in under a minute, before you let someone near your gas appliances.

It's illegal for anyone who isn't Gas Safe registered to work on gas appliances, pipework or flues in a UK home. That doesn't stop it happening, unregistered gas work is still a genuine cause of injury and death every year, so it's worth knowing how to actually verify someone rather than taking their word for it.

Three ways to check

  • Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the photo matches, the card isn't expired, and it lists the specific work categories they're registered for (boilers, cookers, fires, and so on are separate categories).
  • Search the engineer or company by name, registration number or postcode at gassaferegister.co.uk, free, and takes seconds.
  • Call Gas Safe Register directly on 0800 408 5500 if you want to double-check over the phone.

Why the category matters

Being Gas Safe registered doesn't mean an engineer can legally work on every type of gas appliance. Registration is broken down by category, boilers, cookers, gas fires, commercial catering equipment, and so on. An engineer registered for boilers isn't automatically qualified to service a gas fire. The ID card lists exactly what they're certified for, which is exactly why it's worth actually checking it rather than assuming.

Every one of our engineers is Gas Safe registered (registration number 640036), and we're always happy for you to check that yourself before we start any work.
